Anna-Lena Mieke
Anna-Lena is a researcher with a focus on the intersections of colonial legacies, conservation, and armed conflict in African national parks. Her work examines how historical governance structures continue to shape present-day patterns of conflict around protected areas, combining social-ecological perspectives with critical conservation research. As a fellow of the working group, she contributes both as a researcher and as a science communicator. In her role as Science Communication and PR lead, she makes the group’s findings accessible and engaging for wider audiences, ensuring that complex research is translated into impactful stories and dialogues.

My personal blog on Substack extends this work by acting as a kind of universal translator for research. I take complex ideas about conservation, conflict, and social-ecological systems and make them clear, honest, and useful for wider audiences. It’s not about simplifying the science, but about opening it up—so others can understand it, engage with it, and build on it.
